Keep It Simple Silly (KISS)
We as a human being have a tendency to make things complex. I would say just follow the principle of KISS – Keep It Simple Silly. Start with songs that are easy to sing and play at the same time. People generally (or may be unknowingly) choose songs that are either difficult to sing or difficult to play or even both. Due to this they either end up singing well and ruining the strumming or vice versa.
How To Choose An Easy Song
Choose a song that is :
- Easy to sing.
- Easy to play.
- Having a simple beat.

How To Sing And Play Guitar Together
Given below is a simple guide on how to do this. Note that every step given below is important so make sure you follow and understand them all completely.
- Practice chords of the song well, before starting to sing along. This is important so that when you start singing along you won’t think about the moment of your hands and your main focus would be on singing well.
- Start with humming the song along while playing guitar so that you become synchronized with rhythm. Once you are synchronized start singing along.
- You may have problem with your timing. If you don’t sing the words at just the right moment, the notes will get ahead of the song. This means there are specific musical notes and specific words that must happen in the performance.
- Don’t rush into playing the complete song all at once. Practice verse-by-verse. When you master the first verse then only jump to the second and so on.
- Play the song audio in the background in slow volume and practice along with it. This will help you in synchronizing with the rhythm and tempo of the song.
- When you have done enough practice and are now confident that you can play guitar and sing together consider recording your voice. This will help you identify the mistakes that you might be make and then rectify them later.
Learning the guitar is more ‘kinetic’ memory, so you have to actually do it to get used to it, and once you get used to it, you’ll be able to do it without thinking. The more kinetic memory you build up for playing the guitar, the less of your ‘conscious’ mind will be used up trying to do the chords. I always say practice is the key, the more you practice the better you get. Have fun with your guitar.
